Concrete contributions to SPARC

• Data base: SSiRC will implement and maintain a website featuring a comprehensive collection of links to available laboratory measurements, in-situ and remote data sets from ground based, aircraft, balloon and satellite platforms ( Database).

  → led by Marc von Hobe, contributions from all members of SSiRC.

• Contribution to climate services: Set up a stand-by system for a rapid climate model based assessment of the decadal scale climate impact of any major volcanic eruption in the sense of a task force (ALARM)

  → led by Claudia Timmreck

• New global stratospheric data sets:
  • SO₂, COS (data sets for aerosol and SO₂ ).
  • Homogenized data of aerosol properties derived from a combination of satellite sensors for the period 1979-2012. This will provide stratospheric aerosol forcing data set in support of CMIP6 and CCMi simulations ( data sets for aerosol and SO₂, builds on 3.4.1-3.4.3).

• New in-situ data sets of species at the stratospheric entry points (i.e. the West Pacific and the Asian Monsoon region) of:
  • SO₂, COS, H₂SO₄
  • aerosol composition, aerosol physical properties

  → led by Hans Schlager, Marc von Hobe, Ralf Weigel, Stephan Borrman

• Assessment (in the form of a review publication) of the relative role of different sources of stratospheric aerosol, including results from new fully lagrangian modeling of the flux of sulfur into the stratosphere ( Develop schemes for CTMs, builds on In-situ measurements, Ground-based remote sensing, Satellite remote sensing and Development of a global inventory of emissions ...).

• The SSiRC climate model initiative to evaluate the ability of climate models to represent the stratospheric background sulfur budget and whereby to improve our understanding of the key processes maintaining the stratospheric aerosol layer and its role in the climate system.
